Former ISAF Youth Silver medalist Paul= Snow-Hansen and New Zealand Starling champion Jason Saunders won the New= Zealand 420 National Championships last weekend in Napier. Second was Francisco= Lardies and Finn Drummond, with Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher= in third place, also ranking as both the top female and the top youth combination.= Former World Champion 470 sailor Simon Cooke achieved fifth place, sailing= with Scott Illingworth.

23 sailors raced, and competition was= described as fierce =E2=80=93 heat wins were shared amongst a number of= the top sailors, and while Snow-Hanson and Saunders secured a clear 12= point margin over the silver medalists, only five points separated the= next four places.

Light boat makes most of light Waikawa winds

From NICKY= JENKINS - A light boat in light winds gave Paul Williams a win in race= 8 of Port Marlborough=E2=80=99s Twilight series at the Waikawa Boating= Club last Tuesday.

Although the handicap system saw Paul=E2=80=99s= Davidson 28 Sovereign start first it had to stay ahead of the fleet to= win and in a light south easterly breeze she made the finish line 10 seconds= ahead of Aquanimity.

Controversy led to a provisional result= for the Open Division with Checkmate protesting Bryce Ecklein=E2=80=99s= fast new boat, Sex on Fire. Matt Kerr won the race with Real Deal,= but if Sex on Fire=E2=80=99s second place is dismissed, Clive Ballett=E2=80=99s= Cosmic Thing may move up from third.

Ash Davey won the Dave Oddie prize for= seamanship setting the masthead spinnaker on Maracas as she crossed the= start line.

Line 7= Regatta wraps up a legendary year

Wellington=E2=80=99s legendary winds did= not disappoint as gusts up to 35knots challenged the highly competitive= fleet of keelboats from as far afield as Christchurch and Nelson that contested= the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club=E2=80=99s premier keelboat regatta= held in the capital over the 13th-15th February.

In the hotly contested= =E2=80=98A=E2=80=99 Division, the Young 11 Clear Vision (Tony & Vesna= Wells) were the popular and well-deserving winners on both PHRF and General= Handicap. It was a Young 11 clean sweep with Flying Boat (Mike Calkoen)= taking out the IRC Division, and also taking home the coveted Port Nicholson= Line 7 Regatta Trophy.

Racing in the =E2=80=98B=E2=80=99 Division was= also incredibly close with boats relishing the conditions on offer and= sharing the spoils. After Midnight (Ross 830, John Floyd) took General= Handicap honours, with the Davidson 35 Blue Magic (Andrew Morrison) and= the Farr 1020 Flying Fish (Ken Papps) taking out PHRF and IRC respectively.

Regatta= Director Pedro Morgan said he was impressed by the closeness of the racing= and the resurgence of interest in IRC in the Capital. =E2=80=9CThe number= of boats who applied for or renewed their IRC for the Line 7 Regatta shows= just how alive and vibrant Yachting is south of the Bombay Hills=E2=80=9D.= Morgan also attributed the surge in interest in the IRC Divisions in the= Line7 Regatta being a part of the National IRC Championship Series, which= concludes in Auckland with the BMW Regatta.

BMW Auckland Regatta winners await BMW Sailing Cup

After= eight races in the idyllic waters off Eastern Beach in the Hauraki Gulf,= the divisional winners have been chosen to face off against each other= in next week=E2=80=99s BMW Sailing Cup.

The first day was lost to bad weather= but the second two days were described as =E2=80=98supreme=E2=80=99 by= organisers and competitors in the BMW Auckland Regatta.

Conditions= on Saturday saw flat seas and breeze in the mid teens, while it was up= and down for Sunday=E2=80=99s two windward/leeward courses and harbour= race were held, with 8-9 knots and the occasional strong gust.

Congratulations to Sean Milner and Dan= Leech, who for the third consecutive year retained to their National title= in the recent R-Class Leander National Championships, sailed out of Naval= Point Yacht Club in Lyttleton. Sean and Dan utilized their hydrofoils to= the best advantage for the early part of the contest, until a breakage= took them back to the =E2=80=98old school=E2=80=99 way of sheer skill and= grim determination.

Sailors flock to Waimakariri= regatta

37 sailing dinghies from as far away as Timaru competed in the= North Canterbury Youth Sailing Regatta at the Waimakariri Sailing Club= this year. Their goal? To win the Kiwi Monograms and 406 Beacon Hire Trophies= put up for the winners in class championship events in six races over two= days.

Saturday was overcast but warm with an easterly wind averaging= 12kts gusting 17, and Sunday saw a change to northwest averaging 19kts= and gusting 30.

Wellington Match win National Bank Cup

= =0D=0A

A team= from Wellington consisting of Josh Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones= won the National Bank Cup after four days of close racing on Auckland Harbour.= The National Bank Cup is Auckland's premier youth match racing championship,= with past winners such as James Spithill prominent amongst the America's= Cup teams of today.

Josh, Matthew and Chris dominated the= early phases of the regatta with their strong starting and boat handling= skills helping them to complete the double round robin phase undefeated= against opposition from New Zealand, Australia and England, including the= current UK youth match racing champions. They also comfortably won their= semi finals before progressing to the finals against the host club team= skippered by William Tiller, who recently won the Bavaria Cup at the Cruising= Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney.

The finals were a lot tighter with= local knowledge of the tides coming into play and almost scuttling the= Wellington team's regatta. Racing was tied at two all after the first four= matches but Josh, Matt and Chris worked out the tide bias to easily win= the fifth match of the finals and take out the championship.

ISAF Youth Worlds Team Update

Following the 420 and RS:X Nationals last= weekend, the ISAF Youth Worlds Team nomination events for 2009 have now= been completed and the top placed Youth entries from the New Zealand Championships= in the Laser Radial, International 420, International Hobie 16, and the= RSX 8.5 Youth Divisions have been nominated for consideration for the NZL= Yachting Trust Youth Team for 2009.

Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher= edged out Logan Dunning Beck and Ben Goodwin to be the best placed youth= aged sailors at the 420 nationals over the weekend. This result gains= them a nomination for the Girls Double handed spot. Alex and Bianca were= the first placed girls in the overall standings at this regatta. Logan= and Ben were the best of the youth boys after clawing their way ahead of= James Turner and Marcus Hansen on the third day of the regatta, and have= now have been nominated in the Boys Double handed space. James and Marcus= have been nominated in the Multihull open space based on their results= at this event along with Ben and Logan who have also been nominated by= the New Zealand Hobie 16 Association, based on their results at the 2009= New Zealand Hobie 16 Nationals.

Talented Sailors= on Prime Ministers Scholarship List

=0D=0A

Olympic boardsailing gold medalist Tom= Ashley is one of 31 sailors from a pool of 380 athletes, 28 coaches, 23= officials and 41 support team members that have been awarded special Prime= Ministers Scholarships, each receiving funding to be put towards university= fees and living costs.

=0D=0A

Funding has also been allocated within= the Scholarship Scheme to coach Nathan Handley, to send representatives= abroad for technical meetings at ISAF, and for an International Judges= Seminar.

=0D=0A

The scholarships enable recipients to pursue tertiary study= or professional development while continuing to strive for sporting success.= Athlete recipients receive up to $10,000 for university fees and a living= allowance of up to $6000 for an academic year. Other recipients can receive= up to $50,000 each year for up to three years. A total of $4.25 million= is allocated in scholarships each year.

Award ceremonies for the recipients= will be held throughout the year in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch= and Dunedin.

Change to SR Appendix 6: Advanced Sea Survival Training

= =0D=0A

A valid= first aid certificate is no longer a prerequisite for the Coastguard Boating= Education Services Advanced Sea Survival and Yachting Australia Safety= and Sea Survival courses, reflecting the change within the ISAF model sea= survival course.

=0D=0A

However yachts racing will still need to comply with the current= Yachting New Zealand Safety Regulations of Sailing with regards to first= aid training requirements (17.35).

=0D=0A

The ISAF Offshore Special Regulations= require the following:

=0D=0A

=E2=80=9C4.08.4 - At least two members of the crew= (Category 1) At least one member of the crew (Category 2) shall hold a= current Senior First Aid Certificate or equivalent and should be familiar= with the management of medical emergencies that may occur at sea including= Hypothermia, and radio communications operations for obtaining medical= advice by radio.

Each of these crew members shall also have undertaken= the training required by OSR 6.01 (Sea Survival Training).=E2=80=9D

The= number of sailors to have had Sea Survival Training shall be as prescribed= by an event Notice of Race and shall not be less than the ISAF Regulations= for all Category 1 events. The ISAF Offshore Special Regulations can be= found on the ISAF website, www.sailing.org.

Reminder: 2009 Yacht Club Survey

=0D=0AIn 2007, 42% of yacht= clubs reported that their membership had increased over the last twelve= months. This is an important piece of information, and is one of the statistics= that we gather from our yacht club survey.

Every two years Yachting= New Zealand conducts a comprehensive survey of the country=E2=80=99s yacht= clubs. It helps us to develop trend data and to review how the sport is= doing nationally. It is also a way for us to evaluate the services it provides= to members, and to obtain feedback on areas of importance or concern. The= information is also important for discussions with SPARC and other stakeholders= and influences the funding that Yachting New Zealand receives. All clubs= have been sent the survey form, and are asked to please complete and return= it to Yachting New Zealand before 3 April 2009.
