Enjoy,
Less than 24 hours out from the start of the 1851 Cup on Tuesday 3rd August, the sailing teams from both TEAMORIGIN and America’s Cup defender, BMW ORACLE Racing, are gathering in Cowes, Isle of Wight.
And I am delighted to announce that Sail TV will be streaming all the races LIVE from approximately 2.30pm tomorrow. Match racing Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with the around the Isle of Wight race taking place on Thursday.
There have been modifications to both the American and British teams since they last raced each other at the Louis Vuitton Trophy in La Maddalena in May. Each has recruited from Ernesto Bertarelli’s America’s Cup team, Alinghi the defenders of the 32nd and 33rd America’s Cup. BMW Oracle Racing has gained New Zealander Murray Jones talented sailor afloat and innovative design engineer ashore and Dutch bowman Piet van Niuwenhuyzen from the team they beat in the 33rd America’s Cup.
Following the appointment of former Alinghi Managing Director Grant Simmer as CEO, Sir Keith Mills’ British team has both of Alinghi’s veteran sail trimmers, Warwick Fleury and Simon Daubney. In addition, navigator Juan Vila, grinder Will McCarthy and pitman Rodney Ardern will be sailing throughout the four days of racing this week in Cowes.
It should be a fascinating encounter. The commentary will be in English and available through our standard Sail TV players. Don’t miss it!

Why?
Congratulations Angus MacGregor, World Champion!
Angus MacGregor has just arrived back from Europe after representing Tinaroo, Queensland and Australia successfully.
His first event was the Access Class World Championships to be held at Rutland Water in England. This was truly an international event with over 100 sailors from 10 nations competing across a number of classes. The Access Class prides itself on being suitable for sailors of all abilities. Competitors range from being profoundly disabled to completely able-bodied and right across the age range.
Angus distinguished himself by being the youngest competitor at the regatta.
His performance in the 2.3 class was truely dominant. He was able to win 7 of the 8 races completed, across a wide variety of wind conditions.
Congratulations Angus, World Champion!
Groupama 40 : à la mi-parcours

Extreme Sailing Series At Cowes Week 2010 – In race 11 (the fourth inshore race of today), approaching the windward mark Yann Guichard’s Groupe Edmond de Rothschild hit Franck Cammas’ Groupama 40 wiping out both rudders, leaving Groupama with no steerage whatsoever.
Groupama 40 were heading straight for the shore at speed and for safety the crew leapt into the water to avoid the impact of hitting the sea wall – deciding they would prefer getting wet than being thrown forward on the boat and potentially injuring themselves.

Launch of Dominique Wavre’s Mirabaud
The Mirabaud, skippered by Dominique Wavre, has finally returned to her natural element in La Rochelle after a three month refit. The navigator is now ready to start fine tuning his boat in preparation for the Barcelona World Race which will kick off on 31st December.
August 2, 2010 – After several months of work, the Mirabaud was launched yesterday in the port of La Rochelle. “It’s a day we’ve all been looking forward to impatiently”, commented skipper Dominique Wavre. “The whole team has been working flat out at the yard for over three months. Today, we are all very proud and satisfied with the work achieved on the Mirabaud!”
The recent sponsorship by Mirabaud has enabled Wavre to carry out an impressive programme of improvements on the boat. The keel head has been replaced along with numerous modifications aimed at improving the balance, hence the performance of the boat. Moreover a new chart table has been designed and a new, lighter engine has been installed.
Totally renovated, Mirabaud is now ready to begin a series of adjustments and training sessions with a view to her next competitive campaign. Indeed Dominique Wavre and Michèle Paret have planned to head offshore in the coming days. In doing so, the two navigators will have the opportunity to get their bearings aboard the boat after several months on the quayside; making decisions on the various modifications to be carried out.
“The boat is absolutely fantastic” revels Antonio Palma, Associate and CEO at Mirabaud: “We are extremely satisfied with how the refit has gone and we are now delighted to be in a position to begin the active phase of our campaign with a view to our participation in the Barcelona World Race 2010-11. Dominique, Michèle and Mirabaud will take our colours around the world! It’s the start of a great adventure.”

Fettler’s Voyages
This blog covers the ongoing life and times of Fettler – a van de Stadt-designed, Tyler-built, Offshore Yachts-finished Trintella 29. She was launched in 1968 and is still going strong.
We had decided to go back to the east coast over the top of Scotland. The 115-mile leg between Stornoway and Stromness in Orkney was very unusual in that we had no wind! We had to motor around Cape Wrath across an uncharacteristically glassy sea. A skua kept us company for a while leaving Stornoway and we saw quite a few dolphins, but they were too busy hunting to do any bow riding. These northern dolphins seem to be a bit more business-like than their southern cousins.
