Inaugural Youth Olympic Games Reach the Midway Mark
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge praised the inaugural edition of the Youth Olympic Games on Saturday as the Games passed their halfway point in Singapore.
“The athletes are having a great time and the smiles you see everywhere are proof of that,” President Rogge said. “So far everything is going smoothly and we’ve been very pleased with the organisation, the competition and the non-sport activities. While it is impossible to provide a full assessment of the Games until after they’re over, so far we are very satisfied.”
Oman Air smashes Round Britain and Ireland record
19-24 August 2010
By Lucy Harwood 24 Aug 2010 15:42
At 09:03:55 GMT today (24/08/10) skipper Sidney Gavignet (FRA) onboard OMAN AIR MAJAN crossed the finish line off Lizard Point, Cornwall to smash the single handed Round Britain and Ireland record. The A100 trimaran broke the existing record held by Thomas Coville by a massive 1 day 15 hours 30 minutes and 44 seconds.
This incredible achievement also means Sidney has beaten the existing fully crewed record time by 1 hour and 7 seconds. This record was set by Steve Fosset onboard Playstation in 2002.
The record attempt has seen OMAN AIR MAJAN sail 1,787 miles along one of the most challenging coastlines in the world. Sidney has tackled huge low pressure systems and sailed through squalls of over 40 knots. This is the first major test for OMAN AIR MAJAN and Sidney ahead of the single handed Route du Rhum race this coming November.
Oman Air on course to break record
Sidney Gavignet on Oman Air Majan is four days into his attempt to beat the solo non-stop round Britain and Ireland record but faces tough conditions as he heads south.
Gavignet and Oman Air Majan have turned the corner at the top of Shetland and are now west of the British Isles after passing through one of the biggest low pressure systems on this trip so far.
“So here we are! 30 minutes before rounding the north of Shetland,k reported Gavignet.. “I am very happy, Oman Air Majan is a strong boat and all is cool here. We are sailing under three reefs and a J3 and preparing to turn the corner. We will then sail upwind for a bit as we aim south, but I say it again I AM HAPPY!”

Sevenstar round Britain and Ireland race
On the eve of the start of the Sevenstar RBI, the race committee gathered together all the 28 participants for a final briefing. Organised under the aegis of the legendary RORC, presided over by the excellent sailor Eddie Warden Owen, the Round Britain and Ireland fleet will race anti-clockwise around the British Isles due to a very deep depression coming in from the Atlantic, generating winds in excess of 50 knots in the Irish Sea.

If we weren’t in England, it is highly likely that the race start would have been delayed to give the depression time to roll over the top of us. However, we are in England. As such the start will take place in due course. Indeed the only evidence of a mainland development is the direction of the course, which has been modified so as to avoid needlessly exposing the smallest twelve metre boats to the storm’s whims.
As far as the rest of the race is concerned, nothing has changed: “It is down to each skipper to decide whether or not to take the start of the race”.
Questioned about the change of course, Groupama 70′s navigator had this to say: “This decision doesn’t come as a surprise to us, especially as regards the smallest boats, who would have taken a real hammering around Fastnet with 50 knots of breeze. It’s a lot of wind, added to which the sea state would also have been very bad. By switching the direction of the course, they’ll be spared”.
President of the RORC, Eddie Warden Owen echoes this viewpoint: “The Sevenstar is a difficult race as you’re constantly sailing close to the coast and there are numerous changes in heading. Those sailors competing in the race are also here to enjoy themselves and get to the finish, not to break their boats…”.

Observing the sailing rivalry between the Winnings, father and son, on opening day of the ninth annual 18ft Skiff International Regatta, one could conclude it’s intense, but it doesn’t stop there.
John Sr.—or, as he prefers, Woody, 58—has a conventional and successful household appliance business in Australia, while John Jr., 24, or Herman, as he prefers—recently was recognized Down Under as “online retailer of the year,” selling similar white goods on the Internet instead of in stores.
“The same as my dad except a newer way,” he said.
Well, Herman, with veterans Peter Harris and Euan McNicol as crew, also showed his dad and everyone else the way by winning the first two of 10 races, although his elder was not too far behind in third and second place, with defending champion Howie Hamlin of Long Beach, Calif. (2-4) another point back in third among 13 entries.
