The first of two opportunities to warm up to the 2010 World Championship happens this weekend in San Francisco — the California Cup | San Francisco Race Week takes place on August 20-22. Eleven teams have registered so surely it will offer the first taste of what is yet to come in late September

It’s the latest Google Earth application, and a demonstration at a San Francisco yacht club Aug. 6 showed how the Mountain View company is set to transform water sports – and any other movement around a city or around the globe.

For boaters, swimmers, and anyone else racing on the water, there hasn’t been an accurate way to replay what happened without specialized devices and software. Now, the track from any GPS device that can connect to a computer can be played back over Google Earth’s rich water, terrain and structure detail. For free.

Black Sheep make Finals

By Tom | Published: August 16, 2010

Hi all,

They do it differently here in Chicago as the top qualifier chooses their opponent and boat for the quarter finals. Surprisingly we were the last team to be chosen despite our results leading into the quarter finals. Don Wilson (USA) was nominated our competitor. Don beat us in the round robin but our team sailed well leading from start to finish in both quarter final races, winning 2-0.

Laurie Jury (NZL), Taylor Canfield (USVI) and Mike Buckley (USA) were the other successful quarter final competitors. Taylor Canfield, being the top ranked chose to race Mike Buckley who again caused an upset to beat Taylor 3-0 in there semi final. Laurie Jury and Black Sheep were once again paired together for a semi final, where all five races included penalties, lead changes and overall some thrilling match racing for the spectators. After being down 2-1 Black Sheep pulled through to win 3-2 thanks to some great team work.

Just days to start of Round Britain and Ireland race

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race starts from Cowes, on Monday, 23 August and this edition of the race has a record fleet competing.

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race is one of the most challenging races in the world and for the 2010 edition, more competitors than ever will be racing around Great Britain, Ireland and all of the outlying islands. The non-stop race has 29 entries and has attracted a diverse range of ocean-going yachts, with world-class professional teams rubbing shoulders with corinthian crews. They all have one thing in common; to take on this iconic race and everything that mother nature can throw at them.

Yachts flying the ensigns of Austria, Britain, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Lithuania, Spain, and Sweden will cross the Royal Yacht Squadron start line off Cowes, Isle of Wight on 23 August. The course takes them through a myriad of different conditions and crews will have to cope with a huge number of elements which make this race just so compelling.

RORC CEO, Eddie Warden Owen explained: “Crews will face the vagaries of the tides and unpredictable weather; dodging oil rigs and container ships as well as relying on tactical and navigational decisions and great seamanship to get them round the course! Most sailors agree that this race is one of the toughest tests as it is nearly as long as an Atlantic crossing, but the changes of direction at headlands will mean constant breaks in the watch system for sail changes and sail trim.”

“European Boat of the Year 2010”, not surprisingly from the Dufour Yachts stable. Already widely acclaimed by the general public, the professional press too has recognized its many excellent features.

Beautiful, big, modern, rich, and innovative — and what’s more, it goes very fast! You could say this Dufour 405 has all the attractions of the perfect heartthrob!

Like its forerunners under the Dufour ‘longship’ sign, this latest Grand’Large model sets a new standard for cruising yachts. So it’s not about to be rivalled — except by another Dufour yacht!

Want sales and more interest in boating? Talk with women

‘There’s a little bit more to getting women onboard than accessories in pink!’    .
Judging by the diverse program and range of entertainment at the various boat shows in Australia, and many of those in Europe and the US, it’s clear women and families are finding themselves on the radar a lot more. But when you consider females make 80% of ALL purchasing decisions, it’s nowhere near enough if boats, boating and events are to remain relevant and competitive in a world bursting with other pastimes and options.

Sure, we have seen boat shows throw in a fashion show and female speaker are becoming more prevalent. In the UK at the London Boat Show, there were even girls in designer lingerie onboard some very nice yachts indeed – in mid-Winter, mind you. They had expensive jewels on too as I recall, which at least is moving away from PFDs and wet weather gear. But, advise the experts, there needs to be a total reworking of not the product, but the tone, ambience and authenticity of speaking WITH women (and their families).

The facts are: Women are earning more, spending more and making and influencing a greater range of purchase decisions than ever before. They are choosing not just the grocery brands, but controlling all major purchase decisions in the home as well as the lender that her family makes a mortgage payment to each month for 20-30 years.

Marcus Blackmore buys ETNZ TP52

Former Australian Farr 40 champion Marcus Blackmore has bought the 2009 Audi MedCup TP52 champion Emirates Team New Zealand and intends campaigning her seriously in the major Australian inshore regattas this coming season.

He has the Botin and Carkeek design team working on modifications to optimise the boat for IRC handicap racing and will take delivery after the boat completes the current Audi MedCup circuit’s last regatta in Cagliari, Sardinia, from September 20-25.

The boat, steered by Dean Barker with a crew of Emirates Team New Zealand America’s Cup sailors, is currently leading the 2010 Audi MedCup scoreboard after three regattas and with two to sail, with 97.5 points from Quantum Racing (Terry Hutchinson, USA) 126 and Artemis (Paul Cayard, Sweden), 143.

Blackmore, who has been to the Mediterranean to sail with the ETNZ crew on the boat, hopes to have the boat in Australia in time to prepare for the Rolex Rating Series in Sydney in December. “They are very impressive boats to sail, just like the Farr 40s only bigger.”

The annual Air Tahiti Nui VonZipper trials (Aug 16th-19th, 2010) is the most prestigious trials invitational on the ASP Men’s World tour. Just the winner and the highest-placed Tahitian surfer are guaranteed a place in the Billabong Pro Main Event from a stacked field of 64 big-wave, barrel riding specialists.

18ft skiffs to show America’s Cup the way?

If the powers ruling the next America’s Cup want to make sailing a spectator sport, they need look no farther than their own front yard for a primo demo with the ninth annual 18ft Skiff International Regatta starting Sunday.

The fast and frighteningly unstable three-person boats winging it in reliably brisk breeze will make that point in the natural amphitheater fronting the host St. Francis Yacht Club and its next door neighbor, the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The latter now owns the sport’s top prize through the efforts of its representative, the BMW Oracle Racing team of software tycoon Larry Ellison.

While BMW Oracle dangles the bauble before the world in the insufferable process of determining the best site to defend it, the 18s already know. Take it from Howard Hamlin, the Long Beach saltwater thrill seeker who has won world championships racing on the edge on International 14s, 505s and on 18s’ in the JJ Giltinan Trophy classic in Australia
