Two bullets for 14 year old Squib sailor

Competitors and visitors to Cowes Week may remember a report run a couple of years ago on the up-and-coming young Squib sailor Fred Warren-Smith who, at 12 years old, was the youngest skipper competing at Cowes Week, writes Sue Pelling/CWL.

Two year’s on, Fred Warren-Smith, who is now 14-years-old, remains the youngest skipper and, sailing Aquabat, is giving the rest of the fleet an exceptionally good run for their money. In fact, in Saturday’s light wind opening race, Fred, crewed by his father Steve, notched up his first win of the week, and on Sunday bagged another win which puts him in the enviable position of being the ‘one to beat’ this week.

Race plans are ship-shape for 29th year

The 29th edition of the HSBC Premier Coastal Classic is in preparation mode and as well as a great looking fleet that includes several new boats, sponsors have contributed a prize pool worth $40,000.

2010 marks seven years of involvement for HSBC Premier in this iconic yacht race.

David Griffiths, CEO, at HSBC New Zealand says: “We’re pleased to again get behind one of New Zealand’s largest and most exciting coastal yacht races.  We hope that this year’s HSBC Premier Coastal Classic results in plenty of good competition, a strong breeze for the skippers and more records for the history books.”

Joining HSBC Premier, which is also sponsor of Division 1, are eight divisional sponsors, each contributing prizes to its line honours winners and handicap placegetters: Musto (Division 2), Safety at Sea (Division 3), Mt Gay Rum (Division 4), Steinlager (Division 5), Duke of Marlborough Hotel (Division 6), RAILBLAZA Ltd (Division 7), Jucy Rentals (Division 8), PredictWind.com (IRC), and SailNZ (Classic Division).

“The party in Russell on Saturday night is followed by a cooked breakfast and prizegiving on Sunday morning,” says race spokesperson Jon Vincent. “The prizegiving starts at 9am sharp and we encourage all competitors to be there for the opportunity to win spot prizes from Southern Pacific Inflatables, Yamaha Motor NZ, and Dirty Dog Sunglasses.”

Snitch GPS will provide real-time GPS tracking of ten members of the race fleet, and Sunday Star Times and Trade-A-Boat Magazine are official media partners to the race.

Predictwind.com will issue an official, detailed race forecast on the eve of the race.

New members at the front end of the race fleet will include Roger Pagani’s new fifty foot catamaran, Triple 8 and Simon Hull’s Open 60 trimaran, TeamVodafoneSailing, which is capable of cruising at speeds of thirty knots. The old Murray Ross designed campaigner M1 is due to be relaunched by Northland boatbuilder Craig Partridge after a turbo refit, and the hot off the blocks Flying Tiger 10 new to the country this winter is also a potential starter.

Are you ready for this year?

join the chatter on facebook here

The NZL Women Match Racer’s have had a great day at the Pre Sail for Gold event in Weymouth.

The stats are:
Day 2 results: 6 wins & 1 loss
Round robin place: 3rd (7 wins and 4 losses)
Quarter Finals: NZL vs Greece – 3:0
Semis: Tomorrow!

This morning we finished the round robin in a steady 12 knot breeze.
Our toughest race in the round robin was against the Australian team (Spithill). The “Aussie vs Kiwi” races are renowned for their high intensity and close finishes…. however the kiwis took this one a little smoother than usual.

NZL was pairded with the Greek team for the quarter finals. The Greeks had bet us in our match in the round robin but we knew we had made some simple errors and had given the race away. We knew we could take them on……no problem.
We raced well from start to finish which resulted in 3 solid wins going our way.
The other teams to progress to the semi finals are Australia (Spithill), Netherlands (Groenveld) and Britian (McGregor).

We think we will be racing the Netherland girls in our semi final.
The forecast is for similar winds.
Big day tomorrow…. we are ready!

Goodnight!
Susannah Pyatt, Jenna Hansen and Stephanie Hazard

La Solitaire sailors halfway to Spain: slow motion finish?

230 miles from the finish of the first leg of the Solitaire du Figaro the 45 solo sailors face a third complicated night at sea in very light and fickle breeze. The past 24 hours have produced several lead changes that continue to evolve on each position report. Yann Eliès makes a fast recovery from running aground yesterday to move up to second place behind Armel le Cléac’h. Sailors get some respite and gather strength for the second, tricky half of the leg across the Bay of Biscay and the high-pressure ridge.

Good Luck Laura

Hey everyone,
I’ve got a ton of great photos from the past few days! Been to the beach a few times, had a small party for the guys on my team, and got to fly down to San Diego to check out some repairs on a friend of a friend’s boat! It’s been a lot of fun but, I’m sorry to say I don’t have the pictures ready yet, but I will do soon!!

The main reason for this blog today is Laura Dekker. Most of you have probably heard about the young 14 year old Dutch girl that wanted to sail around the world alone. She’s been through a lot lately with the Dutch courts keeping her from going. I heard this morning that they are now allowing her to go.

I admire Laura’s spirit – it would be hard not to for anyone who has followed her story. I’d just like to wish Laura the best of luck and a word of advice from a sixteen year old sailor(though I doubt she needs it) have fun! Live life the best you can. There’s no time like now so take all the opportunities you get.

Team Aqua rules the “agua” at RC 44 Valencia Cup

VALENCIA, Spain (1 August 2010) – Chris Bake’s Team Aqua pulled an enviable treble by winning the match racing, fleet racing and overall championship at the RC 44 Valencia Cup.

Bake, a Canadian living in the U.A.E., and crew Cameron Appleton, Jeff Brock, Matt Cassidy, Andrew Estcourt, Ben Graham, Nigel King, Rome Kirby and Chris Noble completed the feat today with a 3-point win in the fleet racing portion of the regatta.

Team Aqua entered the final day with a 4-point lead over Torbjorn Tornqvist’s Artemis of Sweden. After today’s first race Artemis looked set to shoot into first when it whittled that lead to 2 points by placing third in Race 9 to Aqua’s fifth.

“We were 45 seconds late off the line in that race,” said Bake, who described his team as “boxed out and going backwards” when the start gun fired. Aqua had been shut out by No Way Back at the committee boat end of the line.

Bake and crew, however, got a much better start in the 10th and final race, and then covered Artemis like a blanket to secure the clean sweep with a three-boatlength win.

In celebration Bake may have sacrificed his cell phone when he was pushed into the water by class founder Russell Coutts upon returning to the dock.

17 racks up the bullets

Whether it was the amateur driver, changed conditions or new found boatspeed, 17 was “en fuego” today on Day 1 of the fleet racing portion of the RC 44 Valencia Cup.

Coming out of the match racing skipper James Spithill said they needed more boatspeed. They had plenty today as Anders Myralf of Denmark guided the 17 crew to three first place finishes and a fourth to wrest control.

“I have the easiest job on the boat,” said Myralf. “They ask me to do specific things so I just focus on the telltales and the instruments. I never even saw the racecourse until finishing.”

British Clipper yachts enter Round Britain and Ireland Race

Having recently returned from their circumnavigation in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race, the two British entries, Hull & Humber and Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, will be taking to the race track again in RORC’s Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race forms part of the Clipper fleet’s busy calendar of events this summer, during which the boats have been made available for charter for team building and corporate hospitality. It is all part of Chairman of Clipper Ventures, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s dream to get people into sailing either by taking up the challenge of the Clipper Race or simply getting on board a chartered yacht with Clipper Events.

Starting on Monday, 23 August, the fully crewed, non-stop Round Britain and Ireland Race covers 1,802 miles and the two Clipper 68s will be racing against IMOCA 60s, Class 40s, and Multihulls as well as the 100 foot maxi ICAP Leopard which is looking to break Artemis Ocean Racing’s 2006 record of seven days, four hours, 29 minutes and 40 seconds. The teams will start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, Isle of Wight and race clockwise around Britain and Ireland.

Returning to take charge of Hull & Humber after he was med-evac’d in the North Pacific when a wave broke his leg during Clipper 09-10, is Salisbury-based skipper, Piers Dudin.
