Greetings yachties,

Seems the WordPress people have developed an upgrade that means a whole new problem for us, :-( the changes they have made to the code and work involved in putting the upgrade in place is so extensive that the best option is a new template – all double dutch to me. In the meantime enjoy my little collection of yachting news and random humour.

This is the history of windsurfing as we know it. These are the legends of wind.
Welcome to our journey through the history of windsurfing, one of the most fascinating sports ever created. Told by the legends that rode the wind and waters of yesterday, our tale comes in four waves. The first wave follows the rise of invention through the sunset of the windsurfer one design era. Limited access: Strictly Jersey show takes a different tack

By IBI Magazine

Organisers of the Strictly Jersey boat show said they will once again limit access to qualified boaters for its second year. The show will run April 30-May 2 in Cape May, New Jersey.

“We created this last year after some dealers complained that they were spending a lot of money on boat shows but getting very little business,” said Mark Allen, show organiser. “We decided to get people in here who actually buy boats.”

Allen said that 20 dealers and 39 service/equipment providers will take part this year. Last year, attendance was around 3,000 people. “It’s not like the 20,000 people you get at the Atlantic City show,” he said. “But that’s not what we’re aiming for. We want serious buyers.”

Allen decided to require a New Jersey Safe Boating Certificate or Sea Tow ID in order for attendees to prove they are bona fide boaters. Participating dealers are also allowed to invite guests.

Greek Challenge Will Call Kalamata Home and Tempt LVT to the City.

There’s been a lot of bad financial news out of Greece in recent months. Investment has been stifled and many projects have been put on hold. It’s a shame because the country has great sailing venues and a long, long maritime and sailing history. Sotiris Buseas, is passionate about Greece being a place where sailing can thrive. His long term dream is to see the America’s Cup held in a spectacular venue like Santorini and to promote other forms of the sport throughout the country.

The vehicle for this ambitious plan is GREEK CHALLENGE, which surprised many in the first Louis Vuitton Pacific Series in 2009. Since then, GREEK CHALLENGE has been fairly quiet. Unlike other America’s Cup super-teams like TEAMORIGIN and Emirates Team NZ, GREEK CHALLENGE has not been competing in the World Match Racing Tour or the Audi Med Cup. Instead, Buseas has been qorking away at building a base for the team and generating support in Greece for entry into the Louis Vuitton Series.

To that end, GREEK CHALLENGE has announced that the team will be based in the greek city of Kalamata.

IFDS Blind Match Racing World Championships
Lake Garda

Circolo Vela Gargnano on Lake Garda, Italy will host the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships, 2010, Homerus Blind Match Racing from 20-27 June.
Conducted in conjunction with Homerus Associazione Onlus, the event will employ the ISAF Experimental Appendix CBS for Blind Match Racing using the innovative Homerus system of acoustic buoys.

Teams from Italy, Spain, Great Britain, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Finland and Italy have already confirmed their entries. This is the 12th Homerus International Championships and the inaugural event to be conducted as an IFDS authorized World Championship. A separate series of match races will be held for the B1, B2 and B3 classifications for the first time in Bogliaco. The B1 Division for totally blind sailors will be an IFDS World Championship, while the B2 and B3 Divisions will sail Level 2 IFDS International Championships.

Sailors competing in this event must be IBSA classified B1, B2 or B3 – legally blind. The championships are sailed in pairs of identical keelboats by a two person blind or vision impaired crew with a sighted observer on board. Three acoustic buoys, each with a unique signal, define the course and each boat has its own acoustic device that changes signature when it is on port or starboard tack.

Indian Navy Solo Circumnavigation

Having crossed the Agulhas Bank and current without getting into the Roaring Forties and seeing a big system moving in from the West we decided against going any further South and avoid getting into the Southern Ocean. No such luck! The Southern Ocean decided to move up a little and give us a last bit of hiding lest we forget it in a hurry! That meant almost three days of gale force winds with big seas that pushed us well to the North East. No complaints of course as things could have been worse had we stuck to the earlier plan of getting in the Forties. The shackle securing the brand new Stay sail to the furler decided to part company despite all the securing just as the gales started picking up and it was pointless trying to put a new one in those conditions so the sail was furled and Mhadei sailed with just the smallest size of main sail possible.

Following the 2010 RYA Volvo Youth National Championships last weekend, the names of the Britsh team members have been annouced.
Skandia Team GBR’s Sarah Webb OBE, and her fellow RYA Youth selectors unveiled the names of the twelve sailors who will make up 2010’s RYA Volvo Team GBR – the team set to compete for Great Britain in Istanbul, Turkey at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF Youth World Championships (8-17 July).

No fewer than nine of the selected sailors will be making their ISAF Youth Worlds debuts at the event whilst Youth Worlds ‘veteran’ windsurfer Isobel Hamilton will be making it a hat-trick having competed at last year’s Championships in Buzios, Brazil and in 2008 in Arhus, Denmark. Adam Butler and Nicola Boniface will also be making a return to the event having competed in Brazil.

As the High Performance 29er class makes a return to the championships, this time as the Open High Performance Dinghy, Lymington pair Henry Lloyd Williams and Samuel Batten will do battle for Britain in the class.
Having sailed together for almost three years, the 16-year-olds will be making their Youth Worlds debut in Istanbul bringing to the team consistency and a cool head as their greatest strengths. Notable results this year for Lloyd Williams and Batten include winning Eurolymp at Weymouth, the UK leg of the 29er European tour.

Twenty crews face off in sailing national champs

When the Young 88 fleet gathers for its annual national championship event, you can guarantee a fleet packed with sailors who are not only amongst the best in the country, but the very best in the world.

Twenty boats will contest the Harken Young 88 National Championships taking place this weekend, 17-18 April in Auckland.

The winning skipper and crew will be considered one of the very best sailing teams in New Zealand.

“The Young 88 is unique in New Zealand in that we have dozens of virtually identical boats racing and cruising,” says event spokesperson Mike Leyland. “It means that top sailors looking for some fun, as well as those with more of a recreational leaning, are attracted to the class, and that we get terrific competitive events such as the Harken Young 88 National Champs, where weekend warriors go up against elite professionals.”

Entries include a contingent from Emirates Team New Zealand to be helmed by Jeremy Lomas, past North American title holder Jim Maloney, and the only female skipper in the fleet, Danielle Bowater. Other active participants in the class and past national champions include the BMW World Sailing Cup winners for 2009 and 2010.

The 2010 Harken Young 88 National Champs, run by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, will be sailed on America’s Cup territory – the waters North of Rangitoto – which ensure a good clean sailing breeze.

Racing will start at 1000hrs on Saturday and Sunday 17-18 April, with a prizegiving to be held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on Sunday evening.
