The start of the opening race of the 33rd America’s Cup – between the Swiss holders, Alinghi, and the American challengers, BMW Oracle – has been postponed due to shifting wind conditions, race officials said.

The race had been due to start shortly after 10am, off Valencia.

The boats were due to take to the water after over two years of sometimes bitter legal battles between Alinghi, owned by the Swiss biotechnology and banking billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli, and Oracle software mogul Larry Ellison’s team.

First stirrings

There are the first signs of wind – at least in some parts of the race area. Is this the start of something, or will it fade? We’re hearing reports of up to 8 knots in some areas, but other parts are down to 2 or 3 knots.

“We want to win this Cup”

“As a Kiwi growing up in New Zealand I never dreamed of sailing the America’s Cup in boats like this,” says Butterworth. “It’s been a fantastic journey for me and, I think, the other guys in the team who’ve come through sailing not only multihulls but also monohulls. To be able to sail on boats like this that are so cutting edge, to limit of design, and the loads and the speeds that we achieve, certainly I wouldn’t give my spot away.”

Postponement continues

It’s still light in the start area. Here, a shot from GMR, from a few minutes ago.
