Regates Royale Cannes September 2009

Iconic coffee table regattabook of the close of the Mediterranean Sailing Season available soon.

PARTNERS IN TRADITON – CLASSIC and MODERN YACHTS in SAINT-TROPEZ

Saint-Tropez, France (September 26, 2009) –Yachting photographers, Juerg Kaufmann and Daniel Forster, and sailing writer, Lynn Fitzpatrick, have teamed up to produce a coffee table book of Les de Saint-Tropez entitled PARTNERS IN TRADITON – CLASSIC and MODERN YACHTS in SAINT-TROPEZ. The book will be packed will stunning images and highlights of the yachts, people and atmosphere of the event.

The regattabook’s development can be followed online at regattabook.com. Each day we will reveal the images that the team will publish.

The 10th anniversary of the event will be exceptional. This year, Les Voiles celebrates the 100th year anniversary of Tuiga and her sistership, Mariska. Many of the world’s most beautiful traditional yachts such as Elenora, Cambria, Shamrock and Moonbeam will ply the same waters as the stylish Wallys. Additionally, all five of Eric Tabarly’s Pen Duick yachts will be assembled in the marina and raced during the day.

The regattabook will capture the essence of the event – the excitement, the venue, the yachts, the organizers, the partners, the characters and personalities that sail these boats. From the quiet of first light to the cacophony of 300 boats leaving port and the Mistral whistling through the rigging, the regattabook will enable you to live vicariously and remember a decade of regattas marking the close of the summer sailing season in the Mediterranean.

Juerg Kaufmann, Daniel Forster and Lynn Fitzpatrick have eyes unlike others in the business. When joined, the team’s talent and professionalism produce an outcome that is the perfect souvenir or gift for sailors and all who have ever dreamed about sailing along the French Riviera.

Jessica Remains On Track

Date: 26 September 2009

Jessica Watson and her team wish to advise all of her supporters that she remains on track to achieve her goal of being the youngest to sail solo around the world.

Further to today’s media reports, Jessica’s parents Roger and Julie confirmed receipt of an official letter prepared by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) in regards to the incident with Ella’s Pink Lady and the bulk carrier Silver Yang.

The MSQ letter was confidential and made some recommendations which have been adhered to, despite the fact that the incident occurred outside MSQ’s jurisdiction.

It is disappointing that the MSQ letter has been leaked to the media.

Jessica’s team wish to advise that they respect all of the maritime authorities and the important role they play in ensuring safety on the sea. Jessica has conducted herself in a highly professional manner right throughout the enquiry process. It is only right to expect a reciprocation of that level of professionalism.

Jessica’s team will continue to treat the MSQ letter as confidential and, as such, will not be making any comment on the contents.

MSQ has last week conducted inspections of the recent repairs to Ella’s Pink Lady and are satisfied with the safety of the vessel.  The team is now undergoing final preparations on Ella’s Pink Lady on the Gold Coast, with Jessica planning to sail to Sydney later next week.

melges 32 worlds ph m ranchi (4)

The penultimate day of racing at the 2009 Audi Melges 32 World Championship in Porto Cervo saw three races and some high drama on the racecourse. It proved to be a difficult day for overnight leader Claudio Recchi on ‘Team 93’ who up until today had hardly put a foot wrong. Today however he stumbled badly only managing to record one result inside the top ten. This allowed his rival for the overall title, Pieter Taselaar on ‘Bliksem’ to move into the overall lead with an impressive 4,5,2 scoreline for the day. Armando Giuletti at the helm of Lorenzo Santini and Alessio Marinelli’s ‘Uka Uka Racing’ continued their steady improvement during this week, posting a 2,2,10 to move into third place overall with just one more race to sail. Today’s race winners Andrea Cechetti on ‘Bagua’, Joe Woods on ‘Red’ and Giovanni Maspero on ‘Joe Fly’ all failed to match their victories in the other two races and have each dropped places.

With just race ten left in the schedule for tomorrow ‘Bliksem’ with twenty-nine points now hold a commanding lead over ‘Team 93’ who are on forty points. The situation could also be dramatically altered if a protest from the USA boat against the Italians for a an alleged infringement at the first windward mark of the final race is upheld.

Top ten after ten races…

1. Bliksem 29 points

2. Team 93 40 points

3.Uka Uka Racing 47 points

4. Joe Fly 53 points

5. Bagua 66 points

6. Mascalzone Latino 66 points

7. Argo 70 points

8. Pilot Italia 71 points

9. Brontolo 72 points

10. Red 73 points

Audi Melges 32 World Championship 2009

Porto Cervo, Italy

Claudio Recchi’s Italian Team 93 remains in first place overall with three races having been run in the Audi Melges 32 World Championsip 2009, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Pieter Taselaar’s (USA) Bliksem took a bullet in today’s only race and climbed from yesterday’s third place to sit in second place overall ahead of Stefano di Properzio’s Mataran (ITA). Red (GBR), owned by James Woods, slipped from second overall to fourth after taking sixth place in today’s race. Recchi, who is one of the most experienced Melges 32 owners, also has aboard with him former Melges 24 World Champion Federico Michetti (ITA) and American two-time Olympic medallist (1984 gold in the FD, 2000 bronze in the 49er) Jonathan McKee (USA). Victory, however, is by no means assured to any of the current leaders, since there are three more days of racing to go and a possible seven more races to be held with a discard coming into play after race six.

The Practical Boat Owner (PBO) awards are designed to recognise marine businesses and individuals who have taken steps to make their industry more environmentally friendly, with four categories: product, boat and boatbuilder, service, and campaign.

Sandown-based engineers Hybrid Marine were honoured for their hybrid diesel/electric drive, alongside the boatbuilding arm of Ronautica Group, one of Spain’s largest marine companies, The Green Blue, an RYA/BMF joint environmental initiative and charter company Sunsail, with special mention going to Volvo’s Eco Challenge and Wilks PVC for recycling used materials.

Graeme Hawksley, Managing Director of Hybrid Marine was highly pleased to receive the PBO Green Award and said: “We have been developing our hybrid technology over the last seven years and it is very gratifying to receive this recognition. Soldini1_469x313

An Italian campaign led by Giovanni Soldini has been officially confirmed for the 2011-12 race.

Known as Italia 70, the team will race under the il tricolore with an all-Italian crew for the next two editions of the race.

Soldini, 43, has completed two single-handed round the world races and has made over 30 Atlantic crossings. He is partnering with John Elkann and Carlo Croce on the project.

In announcing the campaign at a press conference at the Yacht Club Italiano in Genova today, Soldini said: “Sailing this regatta is the dream of my life. I was just a child when the race started back in 1973. I remember thinking about what a great adventure it was, in fact the biggest adventure and I wanted to be part of it.

“This winter I sailed with John Elkann and I transferred this dream onto him as well so I want to say a big thank you to him and Carlo Croce at the start of this new adventure.

Italia 70 has acquired and will compete aboard Ericsson 3, the second generation Volvo Open 70 which carried the Nordic team’s hopes in the 2008-09 event. Italia 70 will draw on Italian yachtsmen and women to build a national offshore racing team, which will showcase Italian sailing talent.

“The philosophy behind buying Ericsson 3 was to give ourselves as much time as possible,” Soldini added. “In Italy we have a lot of very talented sailors but we don’t have huge experience so we need to start training immediately.

“We want to build a great team and work on this team as we learn about the boat. Also buying a used boat means you buy the know how of it as well.”

The Italian Sailing Federation, together with Soldini, will develop the first Italian ocean sailing school in parallel with the Volvo Ocean Race.

The UK based VESTAS SAILROCKET team are to return to Walvis Bay in Namibia for one more assault on the outright speed sailing record. The 28 day record period will commence on the 2nd of October.

This will be the final record attempt for this wonderful boat. It has endured a long and eventful life to reach its current level of performance and its structure bears the scars of many a hard earned lesson. This is truly a unique and significant craft which has shown the potential of a radical concept for achieving both stability and efficiency in high speed sailing craft. The team, together with the sponsors and supporters have shared a fascinating journey but their ultimate objective, to be the outright fastest in the world, remains. The journey will only end when this objective is reached, one way or the other.

Already, since committing to this final attempt, the bar has been raised by the mighty French Hydroptere. In fact the outright record has been broken 6 or 7 times by 3 (and nearly 4) different craft since Sailrocket was first launched in 2004. VESTAS Sailrocket has already beaten the record as it was when she was launched, but now she needs to go almost exactly 4 knots faster again to achieve the new outright record of 51.38 knots*.

Pilot/ project manager, Paul Larsen- Firstly, Congratulations to the Hydroptere team, we’ve got some work to do… but we wouldn’t be in this game if we didn’t like a challenge. Whilst it has been great to race the other true ‘boats’, it is the outright record we all strive for. This means that ultimately we have to beat the board riders as well. The MI (Macquarie Innovations) boys showed that they were within reach, now thanks to Hydroptere, the boat record IS the outright speed sailing record. Soon it’s going to be our shot to see if we can turn it up some more.

Greetings everyone, once more from the VESTAS SAILROCKET operations base in Walvis Bay , Namibia.

We arrived yesterday afternoon after a round-a-bout tour of Africa via DOHA in Qatar, Johannesberg, Cape Town (overnight stopover) and then a final flight into Walvis Bay itself. I’ve never seen Walvis Bay from the air. It looks tiny. Emerging from that tiny cabin into the glaring Namibian sun, I mused to myself was like coming out the tip of an intravenous needle right into the heart of the speed sailing world.

We had maxed out our luggage and it had been a real effort to get everything down here. We had all sorts of fragile toys… some of which are up to 7′ long to get through customs and baggage terminals. I was wearing all my warm tops at once and every pocket was crammed with heavy technical stuff. Anyway… here we were… back at the arena with all that behind us. What now lays ahead of us is a big job and a big ask.

We have to hit the ground running in order to make the most of this upcoming record attempt. There are only three of us here now, myself, Alex Adams and Helen Rollinson. Helena will come down with the rest of the team in a few days.

It has only been 24 hours but we have already got a lot done. The soft hangar is up beside the container and VESTAS SAILROCKET is outside and upside down getting her undersides touched up. The support RIB is outside with the batteries on charge and I’m online and in touch with our litte world.
