The telltales make the trimming of the sails and the steering of the boat easier. You shouldn’t stick too many telltales on your sails – when sailing, the amount of information streaming in exceeds the capacity of the crew, so keep it as simple as possible.

Ships currently at anchor in Singapore – Map & Pictures
Apparently 80% of the ships that operate from Singapore are now at anchor because they have no cargo to carry.
Vessels have been taken out of rotation due to the declining market / global economy. And this is just Singapore…

16 April 2009
An impressive twenty-one Melges 32s are ready to go racing in Malcesine, Italy on April 17-19 for event number one of the 2009 Audi Sailing Series. This regatta marks a major milestone for the European fleet. All eyes have turned to the beautiful Lake of Garda for the ultimate showdown of speed, consistency and high performance racing.
The majority of the fleet is made up of a very strong, and intimidating Italian armada. Reigning Audi Sailing Series Champion Claudio Recchi on ITA-93 Team 93 is back, this time with a new ride and team that includes Jonathan McKee and Melges Europe’s Federico Michetti. Lorenzo Santini and his now famous ITA-1 Uka Uka Racing has embellished his crew with reigning Melges 24 World Champion Lorenzo Bressani as tactician. Luigi Melegari on ITA-181 Matrix made a strong showing in 2008, and for 2009 expects nothing less from his star-studded line-up featuring Olympic medallist Matteo Ivaldi.

Getting Onto the Plane – A White Paper by Pilote Media.
April 17, 2009 by admin
Pilote Media are proud to announce a new series of White Papers that use sailing and Yacht Racing to explore themes of Sports Marketing, Sponsorship, Social Media, Brand benefits and Return on Investment.
With the current economic climate in mind, David Fuller, CEO of Pilote Media and Contributing Editor of Yachtsponsorship.com, looks at the relative merits of sailing versus more traditional or well known sports.
The title; ‘Getting Onto the Plane‘ refers to the process of a boat lifting out of the water to skim across the surface of the water rather than pushing through it. The series aims to give potential sponsors, Marketing Directors, Event Organisers and competitors insights into the business of yacht racing and get them racing more quickly.
The First Paper ‘Getting Onto the Plane – Assessing the Benefits of Yacht Racing‘ is an overview of the topics and themes that will be covered by future papers. It touches on how sailing provides positive brand associations and how technology can provide new audiences. There are also messages for politicians and media who have sought to characterise sponsorship as a wasteful perk : Sponsorship of sport is a legitimate part of the marketing mix and can deliver real return on investment.

Curtain raised on l’Hydrotpère.ch
On Wednesday during a press conference organized in Lausanne, on the campus of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), which is the scientific adviser of the project, Alain Thébault and a part of his team unveiled the drawings of l’Hydroptère.ch.
This new lab boat, whose building has already started in Brittany, will be a trial platform on a reduced scale for the future Hydroptère maxi.
Following the same experimental process as Alain Thébault who built three models before the existing 60 ft trimaran, the main purpose of l’Hydroptère.ch will be to test geometries and behaviours in real conditions in order to design l’Hydroptère maxi.
The programmes led by the Hydroptère team are scientific and technological projects, whose purpose is to revolutionize the world of sailing and further develop the innovative concept of flying boats. l’Hydroptèe.ch registers in this global approach.
Thus the design of l’Hydroptère.ch was focused on the desire to maintain and optimize the equipment related to the boat’s speed and behaviour “in flight” whilst developing points such as versatility and navigation in light winds. These two elements are decisive for l’Hydroptère maxi to attempt oceanic records (Atlantic and Pacific) or Jules Verne’s Trophy around the world.
The design studies for l’Hydroptère.ch were carried out jointly by our engineers, our “Papés”, the EPFL-laboratories involved in the project but also all the engineering offices collaborating with the Design Team Hydroptère, which coordinates all these people.
The geometry of l’Hydroptère.ch is innovative as she is a 35 ft catamaran with a central structural peak and v-shaped foils.
She will be equipped with a centreboard to sail with the foils out of the water when conditions are not favourable for “take-off” and no more with only one rear tail unit as on l’Hydroptère but with two rear tail units known as rudder-elevator. This will improve the balance in flight. The rigging was designed so as to meet a wide range of weather conditions.
l’Hydrotpère.ch aims to validate the choice of a new geometry as well as permitting the effects of numerous parameter combinations to be evaluated based on the boat’s performance. The boat will therefore be a veritable floating laboratory, equipped with ingenious mechanical systems that will enable a multitude of adjustments whilst sailing. The platform as well as all the elements and technologies tested on l’Hydroptère.ch should be transferable to the maxi.

Alain Thébault and a party of his team revealed the plans of Hydroptère.ch during a press conference organized in Lausanne, on the campus of the federal polytechnic school, scientific adviser of plan yesterday.
This new boat laboratory, building of which has already started in Brittany, will be a trial platform with ladder reduced by future Hydroptère maxi.
Drawing inspiration from the step of Alain Thébault, which first constructed three models before launching into that of the actual 60 feet trimaran, Hydroptère.ch will have as main objective to test geometries and behaviours in real conditions varied with the aim of the comprehension of Hydroptère maxi.

Among them there will be some brand new boats such as Patrizio Bertelli’s Luna Rossa, new IMA Member together with Udo Schuetz’ Container and Niklas Zennstrom owner of RAN. Also taking part is the new Swan 68 Risktaker, owned by Peter Jebson and Bellamente, owned by Hap Fauth.
The IMA will be present in Palma with its Technical Officer and personnel to coordinate ratings, controls, scorings and all matters relating to the Maxi fleet and activities and will be organizing a social event.
